Meet Ben Gist, a business development lead in our Raleigh office who has been with the company for nearly six years.
1. What five words best describe you at work?
Enthusiastic, intelligent, loyal, authentic, and driven.
2. What do you do to relax?
I fish – at whatever body of water is closest. Although I like saltwater fishing – I was in Ft. Lauderdale last month – because of proximity, I’m usually in freshwater. I also garden and cook – which kind of go together. This year, I’m growing peppers, tomatoes, squash, sweet potatoes, and – because we talk about it all day at work – some field corn. Next year, I’m planning to grow pumpkins, too. I have a few seeds from the 2013 NC State Fair Great Pumpkin Weigh Off winner, so I’m hoping to compete in 2019.
3. What’s your favorite book or movie?
The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway. It’s a book that has stayed relevant for me. When I first read it, I related to the little boy in the story. When I read it again recently, I related more to the old man. I also like that you can read it in about a day. It’s only about 100 pages long. And, it’s got one of my all-time favorite quotes in it: To hell with luck, I’ll bring the luck with me.
4. What are people surprised to learn about you?
I scuba dive a lot. And after college, I lived in Hawaii and in Costa Rica.
5. What advice would you give a new TKXS employee?
Don’t underestimate the willingness of your new teammates to help you grow. They may connect you to the right resource, or broaden your perspective, or be willing to give you a glimpse into the work they’re doing.
